Serial killer James Barnes, who tortured and brutally killed his wife and a nurse, was executed yesterday at Florida's Raeford prison, where he had been serving his sentence since 2005.

Two shocking murders committed in 1988 and 1997 landed James Barnes in prison for life. Described as a cold-blooded serial killer who has expressed no remorse at any point while serving time for his crimes.

James Barnes was in prison in 2005, serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Linda Barnes, who he strangled to death in December 1997.

But at the time he confessed to raping and murdering 41-year-old nurse Patricia Miller in 1988.

According to his confession, Barnes broke into Miller's bedroom window in Melbourne, Florida in 1988, where he testified that after raping and killing the nurse, he set her bed on fire to cover up the crime.

Until his confession, her murder was unsolved.

"I killed him so that there would be no witnesses or complaints against me," he wrote in a letter.

So, yesterday morning, serial killer James Barnes died by lethal injection at the Florida State Prison in Rainford, at the age of 61.

According to media reports, Barnes woke up at 5:30 a.m. Thursday and didn't ask for a last meal.

He also had no visitors before the execution.
