Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Rosen Zhelyazkov, resigned on December 11 after weeks of protests against corruption.

Thousands of people have protested in Bulgaria against the government's budget plans, forcing the executive branch to abandon them. The protesters then demanded the resignation of the ruling cabinet.

Zhelyazkov announced his resignation in a televised statement minutes before Parliament was scheduled to vote on a motion of no confidence in the executive.

The government's resignation comes shortly before Bulgaria joins the eurozone on January 1, 2026.
