Saimiti is held in Brussels/ Meloni: With centers in Albania, the path to the EU

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni participated in the day-long international conference to combat migrant smuggling, held in Brussels.

Its stance on both the fight against illegal immigration and foreign centers is gaining ground in Europe, and the conference of justice ministers from the 27 countries of the Council also approved a document presented by Italy and Denmark to more strictly redefine the status and protection of immigrants.

There is still no full green light on the issue of centres outside the EU to hold migrants before repatriation, but the atmosphere is changing. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen herself said that it is not enough to target just one link in the chain of smuggling illegal migrants and that is why Europol will receive more funding, tripling its border control force to 30,000 officers.

Meloni said that Italy strongly believes in this alliance and considers it an initiative that the Italian government is taking forward that is no longer just an Italian initiative, but has become a European and international strategy that can rely on structured synergies at different levels.

Prime Minister Meloni says that it is a great achievement that 27 nations have joined the declaration on the need to update the implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights in today's complex world.

"I am very pleased that Italy is now playing a very important and proactive role on immigration and security issues within the Council of Europe," she said before the international conference.
