British writer Sophie Kinsella, author of the famous "Shopaholic" series, has died at the age of 55.

Her family announced that she passed away after a battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, diagnosed in 2022. The statement said that Kinsella passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Her books have sold over 50 million copies in more than 60 countries and have been translated into over 40 languages. The literary world has expressed its grief and deep appreciation for the writer, who was known for her humor and unforgettable characters.

Her publisher described Kinsella as a unique voice who raised the bar for romantic comedy. Her colleague Jill Mansell called her not only an extraordinary writer but also a wonderful person. Kinsella was born in London and began her studies in music, before studying philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford, the BBC reports.

She published her first novel at the age of 24, and her fame exploded with the book “The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic.” The character Becky Bloomwood quickly became an icon, and the novel was adapted into a successful 2009 film.

During her career, Kinsella wrote 18 other books, including novels for young adults and children. Her final work, published in 2024, dealt candidly with her personal experience with cancer. The author is survived by her husband Henry and their five children.
