The 90-minute meeting between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Palazzo Chigi, publicly presented as constructive, was more complicated than officially communicated.

Diplomatic sources report that both sides have clearly expressed disagreements and mutual pressures regarding peace negotiations and military support for Kiev.

During the meeting, the Ukrainian staff asked Italy for a more active role in several key issues: unlocking Russian assets frozen in Belgium, making a decision on the Purl program, involving Italy in the purchase of American weapons that will then be sent to Ukraine, and using part of the funds of the European SAFE program for military assistance to Kiev.

Italy is not among the EU countries that have so far agreed to use part of their funds for military support.

According to sources from the Italian ruling coalition, Meloni conveyed to Zelensky the message that some difficult concessions may be necessary to achieve peace. The Italian government supports the approach of the United States, which is calling for the acceleration of negotiations.

In Italy, it is also estimated that Zelensky's political positions have weakened after the recent corruption investigations into his government.

According to political sources, Meloni is taking a cautious stance between two positions: European support for Kiev and pressure from the US administration, especially President Donald Trump, who is pushing for a quick peace agreement.

On the other hand, Zelensky has asked Meloni to intervene to soften Trump's stance, who seems determined to close the peace process at a pace that Kiev does not consider favorable.

In the evening, Zelensky signaled that he is willing to consider holding new elections in Ukraine, a step that has been interpreted more as a political challenge than a retreat.

All these elements show that the meeting in Rome was not as harmonious as was publicly portrayed and that the differences between the two governments have become apparent. The Italian opposition criticizes Meloni for an indecisive approach, between European commitments to protect Ukraine and the lack of distancing from President Trump's hard line.
