US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered the removal of the Calibri font from all official department documents and communications. The directive states that the use of Times New Roman will be immediately restored to maintain the formality and professionalism of the documents.

Rubio considers Calibri too “informal” and unsuitable for formal letters, while Times New Roman has been the standard font for about 20 years. He criticized the previous switch to Calibri, imposed by the Biden administration in 2023, calling it an “expensive and false move” to promote diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

The Times New Roman font, with its small decorations at the edges of the letters, is considered more elegant and easy to read, while Calibri was previously selected for its accessibility to people with disabilities and its widespread use in Microsoft products.

Rubio's decision comes as part of efforts to maintain a unified and professional style in all American diplomatic communications and is linked to the historical tradition of the Times New Roman font.

Meanwhile, the change has caused discontent among some diplomats, who express concern about morale within the department, while some traditionalists had also opposed the previous switch to Calibri.
