US President Donald Trump has repeated his claims that US forces have "total control" over the Strait of Hormuz, despite escalating tensions where Iranian commandos seized two cargo ships.
According to Trump, the leadership in Tehran is so divided that it is not known who is running the country, while he described the situation as an internal war between "radicals" and "moderates", reports The Guardian.
However, the president's claims come at a time when a Pentagon report leaked by the Washington Post warns that clearing sea lanes of mines could take up to six months.
It is said that about 20 mines have been placed in the strait, some of them remotely controlled, which makes fully opening up commercial traffic a difficult challenge for the US Navy.
"There is no room for hesitation. I have ordered the US Navy to shoot down and destroy any boat attempting to lay mines in the waterways," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, adding that mine clearance teams are working at triple capacity.
On the diplomatic front, Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend the ceasefire for another three weeks, following talks at the White House. However, an agreement with Iran remains far off.
Asked how long he would wait for peace with Tehran, Trump replied curtly: "Don't rush me. I want to make the best deal, one that's permanent."
Meanwhile, oil prices remain at around $100 a barrel, reflecting fears in global markets. The head of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, warned that the world is facing “the greatest threat to energy security in history.”
While the US is showing force by stopping ships leaving Iranian ports, it remains unclear when safe passage for allied merchant vessels in the Gulf will be guaranteed.
The latest reports on the health of Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, confirm that he is alive and "mentally sharp," but is governing in secret due to severe burns and the need for surgery following the Israeli attack in February.
This aggravated condition of the leader appears to have created a power vacuum where Revolutionary Guard generals are making the main decisions of the war.
