Joint US and Israeli strikes managed to eliminate 48 Iranian leaders within a few hours.
CNN has broken down through video and satellite imagery how US and Israeli strikes killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and dismantled the regime's command structure.
CNN investigation:
With Iran still under attack, we've used video and satellite imagery like this one, of the strike on the Supreme Leader's office, to analyze how the top leadership was dismantled by US and Israeli strikes and exactly where they hit.
We now know from American and Israeli sources that the CIA, along with Israeli intelligence, has been following Iran's top leadership for months, then gathering information on political opportunities for strikes, at times of day when many of Iran's top officials could be in the same place at the same time.
And that place was here, the house of leadership at the heart of Iran's power, which is also the office of the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Now confirmed dead, his home is located in a very old, traditional neighborhood of Tehran, surrounded by government offices, scientific institutions and museums. Khamenei was known for not leaving the complex often. He was seen here in this video just last week, addressing crowds at a mosque.
The Israelis say they hit three objects inside the compound simultaneously. We've identified several locations that have damage. You can see a central building completely flattened. You can also see two craters here. This one appears to have targeted an underground structure, according to a former U.S. special operations technician.
You can also see clouds of vehicles. But that wasn't the only place that was hit. The headquarters of the Ministry of Intelligence was also on fire.
And then there's this drone, right outside the home of former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Today, several Iranian media outlets reported that he had died. CNN has not been able to confirm his death.
Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to the Supreme Leader, has also been reported dead by Iranian authorities.
He escaped death not once, but twice, when Israel hit his home with a precision strike on a top-floor apartment. Almost miraculously, he emerged from the rubble a few days later. This time, he wasn't so lucky. But others have been.
The Iranian Foreign Minister here, Abbas Araqchi, was in Geneva this week. The Iranian Foreign Ministry released this photo of him meeting with his counterpart just four days ago. That trip may have saved his life.
But Iran is still very much under attack. This Sunday morning message shows a strike on the headquarters of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the elite and notoriously brutal wing of the Iranian military.
What happens next remains to be seen, but Iran is responding aggressively./ CNN
