Britain will not join the US and Israel in offensive attacks on Iran

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said during his speech in Parliament that the US has requested permission to use British bases to be able to stop Iranian missiles at the source, where they are in storage depots or ready on launch vehicles.

He says he accepted this new request "in order to prevent Iran from launching missiles across the region" and killing civilians.

However, he stresses that the UK is not joining the offensive attacks of the US and Israel.

Starmer says France and Germany are also prepared to allow US activity at their bases in order to destroy Iran's missile launch capability.

The Prime Minister acknowledges that US President Donald Trump has "expressed his disagreement" with the UK's decision not to initially get involved.

"It is my job to judge what is in Britain's national interests," Starmer continues, saying he remains true to his choices.

In an interview with the Telegraph, Donald Trump said the UK Prime Minister "took too long" to accept a US request to use British military bases for "defensive" strikes on Iranian missile sites.

Starmer has said the UK was not involved in the initial attacks on Iran and calls that decision "deliberate".

He says the best way forward is a "negotiated solution" where Iran agrees to give up "any aspirations" to develop a nuclear weapon and ends its "destabilizing activity" across the region.

The Prime Minister says it is his duty to protect British lives, which, he says, is why they have scrambled British fighter jets "as part of coordinated defensive operations."

These operations have already been effective, he tells Parliament, including the shooting down of a drone heading towards a base housing British service personnel.

Starmer says Iran has attacked across the region and has launched "hundreds of missiles and thousands of drones at countries that have not attacked it".

He says there are around 300,000 British citizens in the region, including residents, family on holiday and those in transit.

He says Iran has hit airports and hotels where British citizens are staying.

"It is deeply concerning for the whole house and the whole country," Starmer says.

Starmer adds that last night a drone hit RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus.

He says it is important for him to say that British bases in Cyprus are not being used by American bombers.

The Prime Minister adds that the attack on the RAF was not in response to any decision we have made.
