US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Turkey this morning to discuss the situation in Gaza, regional issues and bilateral relations with Turkish officials.

Blinken visited the occupied West Bank and Baghdad on Sunday, amid growing fears that the war could escalate into a wider regional conflict.

The top American diplomat, however, received a cold reception in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

He was not met by any high-level Turkish diplomats at the airport, and there have been no high-level meetings with him since he arrived.

President Erdogan also did not meet with Blinken. Usually, when a US Secretary of State visits Turkey, meetings with the president happen, but the situation is different this time.

Shortly before Blinken's visit, Turkey recalled its ambassador to Israel for consultations. Erdogan has also attacked Netanyahu and openly criticized the US for complicity in crimes committed by Israel in Gaza.

Secretary Blinken spoke to reporters before leaving Turkey.

"We had very important conversations with the countries of the region during this trip, about the role that everyone can play so that the conflict does not expand to other countries, and of course we are very focused on the hostages held by Hamas, among them Americans, and we are doing everything possible for their return to their homeland", said Secretary Blinken.

These intense diplomatic efforts came as Israeli forces encircled Gaza City to continue their street-to-street confrontation with Hamas militants who use an extensive network of tunnels. Secretary Blinken hopes that a pause in the fighting would allow aid to flow in and the hostages to be released.

"Efforts continue. We are aware of the deep concern about the terrible consequences in Gaza, for the Palestinians, the men, women and children in Gaza, innocent children - a concern we express every day. We have engaged with the Israelis on steps we can take to minimize civilian casualties. We are working hard to get humanitarian aid into Gaza," said Secretary Blinken.

In front of the Turkish foreign ministry, protesters had gathered with slogans against the United States and Israel, while earlier the police dispersed groups of students who had marched demanding the removal of Secretary Blinken.
