Bloody battles, Russians 'leave bones' in Ukraine rivers

The Russian military tried for the third day in a row to cross a river in the southern regions of Ukraine and for the third time in a row lost almost all armoured vehicles in battle.

Thus declares to the BBC, Serhiy Hayday, head of the Ukrainian army for the Luhansk region. He said Russia was trying hard to cross Siversey Donets in order to surround a strategic city east of Ukraine.

But he claimed that in the days of intense battles, local forces had rapidly destroyed autoarmoured vehicles and helicopters and destroyed three times the provisional bridges built by the Russians to cross the river.

Footage from the scene confirms these statements. They show dozens of armored vehicles burned on the banks of the river.

The Ukrainian information service, InformNapalm, said Russia began its first attempt to cross the river on May 8th. .

But as soon as they passed, Ukrainian forces destroyed the pontoon bridge in the water and Russian troops were trapped.

The UK Defence Ministry said the "very dangerous" efforts to cross the river show the great pressure for advance in the war in which russian army commanders are in.

The river flows through the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, both major Russian military targets.

Moscow has yet to comment on these losses, while there is a "large gathering" of Russian troops in repeated attempts to surround Ukrainian forces.

In repeated attacks, Ukrainian troops said they have "eliminated about 70 units of Russian heavy weapons and equipment", interrupting efforts to cross. It is not clear how many Russian soldiers were killed in the last battalion, which usually consists of more than 500 troops.
