The letter "Z", a symbol of Russian propaganda

Since the beginning of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, the letter "Z" has been used by Russia as a way to identify military vehicles. But it has now become a propaganda symbol within Russia and Ukraine, researchers say.

With the start of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, the letter "Z" was being used on social networks, in patriotic concerts in Russia, in rallies in support of the war, or even in vehicles and clothing.

The letter "Z" has now become one of the main tools of Kremlin propaganda in the war launched against Ukraine.

"Symbols play complex roles in politics. One of the most important roles is to link emotions to the specific propaganda that the Kremlin and other political leaders want to produce. "I think in this case, the letter 'Z' is meant to evoke in people emotions of patriotism, of loyalty," Henry Hale, of George Washington University, told VOA.

The letters "Z" and "V" were first seen on Russian tanks in the days before the war began, but no official reason was given at the time. The Russian Defense Ministry later said the letter "Z" was used to symbolize victory. ("Za pobedu" in Russian means "For victory")

"Typography deals with the dynamics of these symbols, letters and numbers. In the Cyrillic alphabet, which the Russians use, there are almost no dynamic symbols. "But in the Latin alphabet, there are three very dynamic letters: L, V and Z. They are easy to write and extremely dynamic," Vasily Gatov, a media professor, told VOA.

Other scholars say that the use of this symbol by Russia is also done to create national unity.

"First of all, this symbol is aimed at the Russian population itself. "Because the most important thing for the Kremlin is to build support for this aggression, and this opposition," said Henry Hale of George Washington University.

Scholars say the choice of this symbol by Russia is hasty, due to its resemblance to the Nazi symbol. Many American citizens have the same opinion.

"This is a neo-Nazi symbol," he said. "Very bad, scary," said Laurence, a resident of Maryland, USA.

"Nazi symbol I think, this is the first thing that comes to mind," says another resident.

"It reminds me of the president of Ukraine, Zelensky. He is doing a fantastic job! "He is wonderful," said another resident. For many people the letter "Z" has become a symbol of tragedy and war crimes.

French director Michel Hazanavicius changed the name of the film, which he had titled only with the letter "Z", to have nothing to do with the symbol used by Russia. Two bands in Russia, DDT and Bi-2, have also refused to give concerts on stage with the letter "Z".
