EU warns of Israeli sanctions, Borrell: Ministers who incite war crimes must be

Israeli ministers who incite "war crimes" should face EU sanctions, the bloc's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said.

Borrell attacked two cabinet members — Homeland Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich — in posts on social media on Sunday.

He urged the government to "distance itself unassctively" from remarks made by the two about the military operation in Gaza.

Earlier in the day, Ben-Gvir criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for considering a U.S.-approved ceasefire and called for increased pressure on the militant group Hamas as well as the rest of the besieged enclave's Palestinian population.

"If we cut off their fuel, within a week they would fall to their knees. And if we stop trucks with aid, within two weeks they'll be on their knees.

So why would we make a deal, especially such an irresponsible deal?" he said in an interview to Radio 103 FM.

Smotrich previously asserted that the deaths of 2 million Palestinians is morally justified and lamented Israel's need for international legitimacy to wage its war in Gaza.

"No one in the world would allow us" to starve Palestinians, he said, adding: "You can't fight Hamas with one hand and give it help with the other."

In a post on social media, Borrell urged the Israeli government "to unenforceablely distance itself from these incitements to commit war crimes" and engage in ceasefire negotiations brokered by the US, Qatar and Egypt.

Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said: "Killing civilians as a method of war is a war crime."

"This direct and public statement risks instigate further crimes of atrocity," he said.

Such statements, especially by public officials, should be immediately discontinused, they should be investigated and, if found to be a crime, should be prosecuted and punished."
