The General Assembly of the United Nations has passed with 120 votes in favor, 14 against and 45 abstentions, a resolution of the Arab countries, which requires a humanitarian leave in Gaza, to come to the aid of the Palestinians there.
However, the Assembly has refused to pass two amendments supported by Canada and the US, regarding the punishment of Hamas for taking Israeli hostages.
Albania, as far as the resolution of the Arab countries is concerned, has abstained from its vote.
The Canadian-American amendment would have explicitly condemned Hamas and "hostage taking".
It was introduced by Canada in response to a resolution tabled by a group of Arab countries calling for an "immediate, stable and lasting humanitarian ceasefire".
The US had also supported the amendment, criticizing the original resolution tabled by Jordan for not clearly labeling Hamas in connection with the Israeli hostage-taking.
88 members voted in favor, 55 against and 23 abstained on the additional amendment, which failed to receive a two-thirds majority.
It all comes at a time when ground fighting between Israel and Hamas has begun.
