A year before the start of the process to elect the Federal President of Germany, a name that few expected has begun to circulate on the political scene: former Chancellor Angela Merkel.

According to Bild, within some CDU circles, the possibility of Merkel running for the highest state office in the country is being discussed.

Merkel, who led Germany for 16 years and retired from active politics after the 2021 election, remains one of the most popular figures, especially among centrist and Green voters. This fact has fueled speculation that she could be proposed as a consensus candidate, even by other political forces.

Such a scenario would put the current CDU leader, Friedrich Merz, with whom Merkel has had early political clashes, in a difficult position.

But former Chancellor Merkel has dismissed speculation about a possible candidacy for the post of Federal President next year. "This is absurd," a spokeswoman from Merkel's office told Tagesspiegel.

The election of the Federal President is scheduled for February 2027, but early movements within the CDU indicate that the race has already begun. Other names in the running include Karin Prien and Julia Klöckner.
