Former President of Albania, Rexhep Meidani, has addressed a direct call to the Kosovo Assembly: To act without wasting any more time and close the Special Court.

Meidani served as president of Albania from 1997 to 2002, throughout the Kosovo war and its aftermath, strongly supporting the liberation and engagement of the KLA, internationally considering the war as just against Serbian revanchism.

In an interview for Top Channel, Professor Rexhep Meidani commented on the demand made by the Special Prosecution for the liberators Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi, describing the request for 180 years in prison as shameful.

"I personally say that the Kosovo Assembly itself, after seeing the prolongation of the process, should consider making adjustments to the legislation, or ending this court, or letting it be an international structure but not having its finger in this kind of mess," the President said.

He told journalist Kristi Gongo about his visit to the cells in The Hague where the liberators have been held for more than 5 years, recounting how he found them and how much regret those who had voted to establish the Special Court had become.

Kristi Gongo:  Mr. President, do you agree with this position that the history of the liberation war is changing?

Rexhep Meidani:  First of all, it is a shameful indictment decision to the point of disappointment. While in terms of history, it is impossible. They can try, they can serve various interests in Serbia and Russia, but it cannot change the true narrative of the liberation war of Kosovo and the international community that made a great contribution to helping the Albanian people of Kosovo to gain freedom.

-So, you don't think that today's approach of the Special Court matches the way the West viewed the KLA during the war years?

Rexhep Meidani:  Absolutely, the entire international opinion was in favor of the Albanian people of Kosovo and against Serbian revanchism.

-Why is this situation happening?

Rexhep Meidani:  A false situation was created, it started with a publication by Carla del Ponte, who was the general prosecutor of the Tribunal, accusing her of organ trafficking during the war. This was then passed on to the Council of Europe. The pressure continued until the political forces in Kosovo agreed to create the Special Court, and not to be in Kosovo so as not to have any influence. Of course, I did not agree in friendly meetings because I was not in office.

-What did Hashim Thaçi or other leaders say to you?

Rexhep Meidani:  Let them verify it, since they are concerned... that we come out clean.

-When you hear the accusations today and you know them, do you believe that they could be capable of committing monstrous crimes?

Rexhep Meidani:  I never believed it. They were leaders with emotion, with a desire to liberate the country and ready to sacrifice their lives.

-How did you find them in The Hague?

Rexhep Meidani:  From a psychological point of view, it was not positive. You could feel the fatigue, the disappointment, except for Rexhepi who kept his humor and painted pictures. They might have regretted approving such a structure. I personally say that the Kosovo Assembly itself, after the sheer length of the process, should consider making adjustments to the legislation, or even ending this court, or letting it be an international structure but not having a hand in this kind of mess.

-That it seems like you are distorting history with the blessing of the state of Kosovo itself?

Rexhep Meidani:  Yes, exactly, this is important. The Kosovo Assembly must act, and it is even late.
