Another worrying signal for Donald Trump, ahead of the midterm elections next November. This time, the clash comes from the US House of Representatives, which has openly challenged the president: six Republican deputies joined Democrats and approved the blocking of tariffs (customs taxes) against Canada.

The votes in favor of banning the new tariffs were 219, while 211 voted against.

This is a major blow to the president, as most of his votes were lost. It shows that support for Trump is weakening not only among voters, but also within the Republican Party itself.

The lawmakers are reflecting the discontent of the electorate, which has also been shown by several polls, such as Gallup, the Economist magazine's "approval tracker", Reuters/Ipsos, and Real Clear Politics. All of these show a more or less pronounced decline in support for the work of the White House.

Immediately after the vote, Trump declared that Republican lawmakers who oppose his tariff policies "will face consequences in the election," including in the "primaries."
