Secret agents, saboteurs and Moscow's moves to help Iran: The spy war
The War of the Spies

Guido Olimpio – Corriere della Sera

The IRGC, in addition to hitting cities, has targeted specific targets. These include the offices housing the CIA in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), US consular offices that could house missiles in the "shadow", and vital radar stations, starting with those that support the THAAD anti-missile systems.

The Washington Post, in a recent article, has shown Russia's role: Moscow is providing accurate data on American deployments thanks to its satellite network.

China's role, although still a supplier of equipment, has been more discreet. The case of Cyprus, with the attack on the British base of Akrotiri, is interesting. The drone, launched by the Lebanese Hezbollah on behalf of Tehran, opened a crack in the hangar that occasionally houses the U2, the most famous American spy plane. The Pentagon has often deployed it on the island, a constant presence of an aircraft that has not been surpassed despite being in service for decades.

The US and Israel have carried out similar missions to degrade the security apparatus of the Islamic Republic, starting from the intelligence headquarters. Destruction carried out by aviation. There is no precise information on the role of local saboteurs and special forces. Israeli media have suggested the use of commandos in Iranian territory, movements on which there are reservations and scattered rumors to create uncertainty. Incursions by Iranian minority groups that have the advantage of presence in the area are also possible.

Cells

In addition to protecting themselves from airstrikes, the parties are fighting using their agents, from the Gulf to Europe. London has just announced the arrest of four people suspected of collecting information on targets within the Jewish community. Qatar, already on the front lines, has stopped an Iranian-inspired cell accused of monitoring the al Udeid air base, used by the US Air Force. Tensions are high in Bahrain, where central power has long been contested by the Shiite population: an ideal environment for lighting “fires”.

The Greeks, on the other hand, have detained a Georgian-Azerbaijani who was caught near the port of Souda Bay in Crete, a regular station of the NATO fleet. He had many photos of the port: anti-terrorism is investigating. In recent months, Greek and Cypriot security had also identified foreign elements with powerful cameras. Their “job” was to monitor installations that provide logistical support to allies, initiatives designed to anticipate possible reprisals.

At the time, they may have seemed like minor events, but the attack on the Akrotiri base showed that “scouts,” armed with telephoto lenses, could play a role once fighting began. Tehran, aware that an emergency was coming, has dedicated significant resources to reconnaissance carried out by three parallel channels: the IRGC’s Qods Division, intelligence services, and “freelancers,” i.e. foreigners willing to cooperate in exchange for money without ideological motivations.

The Israeli Shin Bet has uncovered a large number of them, showing the ease of infiltration from Tehran and the lack of social cohesion. On the other hand, the Revolutionary Guards have uncovered quite a few enemy collaborators. Some have been executed by hanging.

Doubts

There is always room for endless doubts. Especially the thesis of Arab sources about what is happening in the oil "kingdoms" hit by the attacks. Some of them, according to the accusation, are not the work of the "Khomeinists" but of the Mossad, a way to push governments towards revenge against Iran. In the jargon, "false alarm", a component that fits well with the ambiguities of the Middle East.

Even more visible are the nuances among the less glamorous skyscrapers of Dubai. The Emirates are considering freezing billions in Iranian assets held on the Gulf coast, a financial outlet for the ayatollahs. But they could also “choke” the shadow companies linked to Tehran: there are dozens. They carry out legal and illegal activities, are involved in trafficking, their role in arms or oil triangles has been revealed, and they provide support to circumvent the embargo. Everyone has benefited: the locals, the Chinese, the Russians, the North Koreans.

That's exactly why, for years, the Americans have opened a "center" to deal with this "world": they let the reins loose to see where the horse goes. Every now and then they impose sanctions, they release news about this or that company, but the show continues because many parties benefit.
