If Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris makes history in November by being elected America's first woman president, her husband Doug Emhoff would become the country's 'first gentleman' after passing, for the first time in American history, almost four years as the country's 'second master'.

Doug Emhoff has spent almost four years being his wife's biggest supporter.

"I love you so much. I am very proud that he is doing this for all of us," said Mr. Emhoff.

It's a role the former entertainment industry lawyer expects to continue playing if Kamala Harris is elected president and if Mr. Emhoff makes history by becoming the first husband of a sitting president.

"I will have a similar approach. Where can I be most helpful to her as her husband? I support him, love him as always and be there for him, but also how can I help him as president, help the administration, help the American people, being first, and what issues can I support?” Mr. Emhoff said. .

Mr Emhoff married Ms Harris in 2014 after they first met on a date. As his wife's political role continued to grow, Mr. Emhoff publicly assumed the role of supportive husband.

"He has made it clear that he would not be above this support role and that he would not want anyone to think that just because he is a man, I cannot do this role of substitute and helper," says researcher Kelly. Dittmar, of Rutgers University.

Mr. Emhoff gave up his job at the law firm and began teaching at Georgetown University when Ms. Harris became vice president. He says his wife pushed him to make the role of second master his own.

"Being the first man to do this, let's talk about gender issues. I have spoken a lot about gender equality, wage equality, family leave, child care," said Mr. Emhoff.

In the United States, the spouses of political figures at the highest level have always been women. But Mr. Emhoff has shown he can fit in well, says Anita McBride of American University.

"He talks about their family life. It says before, 'I am here to serve. "My most important job is here, to support the vice president," says researcher McBride.

In the role of second gentleman, Doug Emhoff, who is Jewish, has also led an anti-Semitism initiative in President Biden's administration.

First ladies traditionally focus on social activities, such as overseeing state dinners and approving the White House's holiday decorations.

"It's about the food and the flowers and the glassware. Is that going to be something he wants to do? Maybe yes, maybe not," says researcher McBride.

As president of the Senate Spouses Organization, Mr. Emhoff has already shown a willingness to continue the tradition.

"There are some luncheons, there are activities at the vice president's residence, so I just made sure that I attend those traditional events and, as the first gentleman, there are some traditions that I will keep faithfully," Mr. Emhoff said.

First ladies usually donate the dresses they wear to the inauguration ceremony to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington. It remains to be seen if a men's suit will be added to the collection soon. /VOA
