48 thousand Albanians obtained European citizenship in just one year: Only Syria

In 2024, nearly 1.2 million people acquired citizenship of a European Union country, marking an increase of 11.6% compared to 2023.

Data published by Eurostat show an increasing trend in naturalizations in the EU, with an increase of 54.5% compared to 2014.

In this panorama, Albanians rank among the main beneficiaries of European citizenship.

Around 48 thousand citizens from Albania obtained citizenship in an EU country during 2024, ranking third, after citizens from Syria (110 thousand and 100) and Morocco (97 thousand and 100).

The figures confirm the continuation of a strong trend of emigration and integration of Albanians in EU countries, mainly in Italy, Greece and Germany, where Albanian communities are among the largest.

According to the report, the majority of Albanians who have obtained citizenship have been naturalized in Italy (65.9%) and Greece (22.3%), confirming their strong migratory ties and integration in these countries.

At an overall level, the vast majority of new citizenships (88%) were granted to citizens from countries outside the EU, while only 10.6% benefited citizens from other union countries.

As for the countries that granted the most citizenships, Germany ranks first with 288,700 citizenships (24.5% of the total), followed by Spain with 252,500 (21.4%), Italy with 217,400 (18.5%), France with 103,700 and Sweden with 63,000.

The largest increase in absolute terms was recorded in Germany, where 88,900 more people obtained citizenship compared to the previous year, followed by Spain and France. In contrast, decreases were recorded in Romania and Sweden.

The naturalization rate in the EU for 2024 was an average of 2.7 citizenships for every 100 non-citizen residents. Sweden leads with 7.5, followed by Italy (4.1) and Spain and the Netherlands (3.9 each). The lowest rates were recorded in Lithuania, Bulgaria and Estonia.

The data also shows that the average age of those who obtained citizenship was 31.7 years, while the majority of beneficiaries are young: 37.4% under 25 years of age and 43% in the 25-44 age group. Women made up a slightly larger share of beneficiaries (50.9%) compared to men.

These statistics underline the high level of integration of Albanians into European societies, reflected in the acquisition of citizenship of the host countries.
