Trump introduces "gold card" for immigration to the US

US President Donald Trump has introduced a new immigration program, called the Trump Gold Card, that offers expedited visas to wealthy foreigners who pay at least $1 million.

According to Trump, the golden card offers a "direct path to citizenship for all qualified and vetted persons," giving American companies the opportunity to retain their most valuable talent.

According to the BBC, the program, first announced earlier this year, promises residency in the US “in record time” and requires a $1 million deposit as proof that the applicant will bring significant benefits to the country. Businesses sponsoring their employees must pay $2 million, while a “platinum” version with tax breaks is expected to cost $5 million. In addition, each applicant must pay a non-refundable $15,000 processing fee.

The scheme has drawn criticism, particularly from Democrats, who say it unfairly favors wealthy individuals. Unlike the green card, which allows immigrants of varying income levels to live and work in the U.S., the Gold Card is aimed at “high-level” professionals. Trump has said: “We want productive people. Those who pay $5 million will create jobs.”

The program comes as the Trump administration has tightened immigration policies, raising fees for work visas, suspending applications from 19 African and Middle Eastern countries subject to a travel ban, and halting asylum decisions. In September, Trump signed an executive order imposing a $100,000 fee on new H-1B visa applicants, causing concern among foreign students and technology companies.
