Powerful earthquake in China, over 100 dead are reported

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has struck a mountainous region of northwest China, killing at least 11 people and injuring hundreds more. The authorities have mobilized a series of emergency measures, but the search and rescue work can be challenging due to the sub-zero temperatures.

20 people have been reported missing in the aftermath of the earthquake after several hours of rescue efforts. The epicenter of the latest earthquake was 5 km from the border between Gansu and a neighboring province. The earthquake struck Jishishan County in northwestern Gansu Province at 11:59 p.m. local time on Monday at a depth of 10 km.

Earthquakes are common in western provinces such as Gansu, which lie on the eastern border of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, a tectonically active area. China's deadliest earthquake in decades was in 2008 when a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Sichuan, killing nearly 70,000 people.
