Bekim Sejdiu has confirmed that he will no longer be part of the race for president of Kosovo, announcing that he has informed Prime Minister Albin Kurti and LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku of his decision.
Sejdiu, who had previously announced his withdrawal from the candidacy, has stated that he does not see it as worthy to elect the president solely for the purpose of avoiding elections.
"Someone who deserves that position should be elected president," Sejdiu said.
He announced that he has informed Kurti and Abdixhiku again of his position. According to him, if the LDK requests evidence of this communication, he can also forward the message he sent to them.
Sejdiu indicated that his candidacy was the result of a political agreement between the LDK and the Vetëvendosje Movement, while he said that he had welcomed the support from all political entities.
"I have entered into a political combination of LDK-VV and I welcomed everyone's support. Political parties in general have had good words for me as a candidate and I also appreciate the fact that some journalists and public opinion have had a positive assessment of me," he said.
However, Sejdiu emphasized that the lack of the necessary votes was the main reason that pushed him to leave the race.
"Since I did not have the votes, I have withdrawn from this race," Sejdiu declared.
He has also requested that the presidential election process not be linked to other political issues that he considers important for the country.
"The issue of the President should not be linked to other topics that are important for this country," he said.
Sejdiu's statements come at an important moment in the presidential election process, as the deadline for electing the head of state expires today.
In this situation, Prime Minister Albin Kurti has made an offer to PDK, stating that LVV, together with community MPs, would secure 62 votes if PDK would guarantee half of its votes for Bekim Sejdiu.
