Thousands of dinosaur footprints, dating back some 210 million years, have been discovered in a national park in northern Italy, in what experts say is one of the most important paleontological discoveries of recent years. The tracks, some of which are up to 40 centimeters in diameter, are arranged in parallel lines and clearly preserve fingerprints and nail marks.

According to researchers, they belong to prosauropods, herbivorous dinosaurs with long necks, small heads and sharp claws.

"I would never have imagined that I would come across such a spectacular discovery in the area where I live," said Milan-based paleontologist Cristiano Dal Sasso.

The tracks were first spotted in September last year by photographer Elio Della Ferrera, who spotted them stretching for hundreds of metres on a vertical mountainside inside the Stelvio National Park, northeast of Milan. During the Triassic period, between 250 and 201 million years ago, the area where the tracks are located was a plain, which later became part of the Alpine chain. According to Dal Sasso, the territory was filled with dinosaurs and constitutes an “extraordinary scientific treasure”.

He added that the tracks show that the herds moved in harmony, while signs of more complex behaviors have also been identified, such as gathering in circles, which may have served for protection.

Prosauropods, which could reach lengths of up to 10 meters, usually walked on two legs. However, in some cases, traces of forelimbs have been found, suggesting that the animals stopped and rested their hands on the ground to rest.

Photographer Della Ferrera said he hopes this discovery will prompt reflection on how little we know about the places we live in and about our planet itself.

According to the Italian Ministry of Culture, the area where the footprints are located is deep and difficult to reach, so studies will be carried out using drones and remote monitoring technologies.

The Stelvio National Park is located in the Fraele Valley, near the border with Switzerland, in an area that will host the Winter Olympics next year. The Ministry of Culture described the discovery as a "unique symbolism" that combines the past with the present.
