The Iliad: Who were the heroes who fought in Troy?
Iliad

Invincible warriors and extraordinary gentlemen, these are some of the protagonists of Homer's Iliad.

For the ancient Greeks, in Troy, humanity's strongest heroes faced off, giving their lives in epic wars between them. Let's get to know better some of the most important characters sung by Homer.

Achilles

The Iliad: Who were the heroes who fought in Troy?

The main hero of the poem. His anger is the main theme around which an entire story revolves. Achilles was the son of the Myrmidon king Peleus and the nymph Thetis. He was an unbeatable fighter, except in the heel, where he was vulnerable.

The origin of this weakness comes in different versions throughout history. One version is that his heel was burned when he was small in a fire.

Another version is that his mother immersed Achilles' body in the river of immortality, but the only part that remained outside was his heel. He was a talented army commander. His mother knew that Achilles could choose a long and happy life, but that he would be forgotten in history, than a short life, where he would be remembered forever. Achilles chose eternal glory.

Angry with the Greeks themselves, Achilles let many Greeks die in the war against the Trojans, but when Hector killed his friend Patroclus, he took revenge in the most horrible way possible.

Achilles wreaked havoc on the Trojans. The soldiers leave, and before Achilles stands only the brave Hector. After a duel, Hector is killed and his body is dragged behind the victor's chariot. As his anger subsides, Achilles agrees to let Hector's father, Priam, take the corpse.

Achilles' death came from Paris's arrow aimed at the hero's exposed heel.

Agamemnon

The Iliad: Who were the heroes who fought in Troy?

It was the king of Mycenae who organized the punitive expedition against the city of Troy. Agamemnon was the most powerful of the kings of Greece, but his thirst for power never ended. He took advantage of the boredom of his brother Menelaus who wanted to start a war against Troy since Paris, Hector's brother took his wife Helen. Agamemnon's arrogance became known, not only for his contempt for Achilles, but he was also a great warrior, and killed a large number of enemy heroes.

Menelaus

The Iliad: Who were the heroes who fought in Troy?

King of Sparta and brother of Agamemnon. The Trojan War broke out because Paris, the prince of Troy, eloped with Menelaus' wife, Helen, the most beautiful woman. Menelaus then asked his brother Agamemnon to help him enter Asia Minor and destroy Troy. During the war, Menelaus faced Paris in a duel. In this way the conflict could end, but Hector intervened to save his brother, thus killing Menelaus. Then the angry Agamemnon started the war.

Ajax

The Iliad: Who were the heroes who fought in Troy?

Odisea (Uliksi)

The Iliad: Who were the heroes who fought in Troy?

Diomedi

The Iliad: Who were the heroes who fought in Troy?

Hektori

The Iliad: Who were the heroes who fought in Troy?

A fearsome knight and warrior, Hector led the Trojan army for ten years, putting up great resistance to the Greek army. Son of Priam, king of Troy and brother of Paris, Hector was Troy's hope of salvation and Andromache's beloved husband. After Hector killed Achilles' cousin, Patroclus, after remembering that it was Achilles himself (Patroclus was wearing Achilles' armor).

Hector did not back down when Achilles challenged him to a duel. After killing Hector, Achilles takes his body and drags it around Troy.

Priam

In the end, Hector's body finds peace when King Priam begs Achilles to return the body of his beloved son.
