The Engjëlli princely family is one of the earliest noble families in Albania, which is mentioned since the 12th century.
The administrative center of its possessions was in Drivast (Drisht).
This family was related to the imperial Engjelli family, which ascended the throne for the first time in 1185 with Isak II Engjelli.
The most important figures of this family are Pjetër Engjëlli and Pal Engjëlli, the archbishop of Durrës and a candidate to be ordained cardinal of the Albanians by Pope Pius II in 1464, which was not realized due to the death of the Pope.
Pal Engjëlli was also the first chancellor of Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu. Regarding the coat of arms of Paul the Angel, G.Grimaldi writes that he wore the symbols of the Order of Saint George. This same author describes in more detail the coat of arms of the Angel family, as well as other branches of this family, which went up to the imperial throne in Byzantium.
The coat of arms is silver with a red cross. Above, left, a silver angel in blue robes, holding a green palm branch. To date, apart from the description, we do not have any artistic representation of the coat of arms of the Angels of Drishti.
Pope Pius V confirms to Andrea Angel, the nobleman, duke, prince and count of Drishti, Durrës and Pulti ulë, his blood ties with the Roman emperors, as well as with the emperors of Constantinople./ Gjin Varfi .
