Skanderbeg's carving of a giant building begins work in Tirana for the
Skanderbeg building project

Architectural studio MVRDV has completed the project, while construction began for the Skanderbeg building, officially known as the Tirana Rock, a multifunctional project, which is carved in the form of the National Hero.

The building will be wrapped in curvy balconies that form the form of Skanderbeg's portrait, serving as an icon landmark in Skenderbej Square in central Tirana. Once completed, the project will be one of the largest buildings in the world conceived as figurative sculpture, giving the Albanian capital a unique identity.

Raised 85 meters, the multifunctional building is located in the northeastern corner of the square. At street level, the building's lacqued silhouette fills the edges of the site. Skanderbeg's "shoulders" match the wider part of the brain, while his head is turned right, facing the square bearing his name.

It is designed using balconies that envelop the entire building at all levels, with curvy extensions that form face details like noses, ears and beards. The final design is a delicate symbolic intervention, which may not be very visible to people at first glance.

Archdaily, an information page specializing in architecture and art in construction, writes that: "Perfectly adapted to a city that has developed a tradition of mixing art and architecture as part of its postcommunist renaissance, the building offers well-designed and functional dwellings in one of the most coveted places in Tirana".

Balconies allow the interior spaces of the building to adopt rational floor layouts, while offering a significant amount of outdoor space. Inside, the building contains a floor for commercial activities and four floors that will serve as offices. Above, 20 floors will be residential apartments that occupy the head. The apartments are designed with special care dedicated to each individual layout to ensure that these houses are functional despite the irregular shape of the building.

Each balcony will be divided into giant pots planted with local plants, which allow greenery in the surrounding area to expand to the building, making it adaptable to Tirana's warm climate. Due to the wide hanging balconies, the building is protected from excessive sun rays and the floor extension enables natural cross-airing. Rainwater capture and heat recovery systems minimize the building's water and energy requirements.

"Today, cities around the world look more and more like each other – I always encourage them to resist this, find their individual character and emphasize it. For me, the Skanderbeg building is an opportunity to do just that. It brings new meaning to existing elements of Albanian architecture. As Albania begins its negotiations to join the EU, projects such as this are part of the European Project. The project highlights Albania's history, character and presence in a Europe united with many states," says Winy Maas, Founding Partner of MVRDV.
