The toxic waste scandal started by Albania, which attracted the attention of the international media, is being investigated by the Durrës Prosecutor's Office, which says that investigative procedures have been initiated by the Port of Durrës and by the company that transported and loaded this waste into containers.
It is about two loads at different times that were transported and loaded into containers by the same company at the Port of Durrës. The first is in April and the second in July this year.
The cargo of April has been blocked in the Gunzho port of China and the Chinese authorities have started the procedures for their return to our country. The second is cargo placed on two ships of the international shipping company, Maersk, bound for Thailand.
For the April cargo, the Albanian Customs have stated that they are of origin from Kosovo and have used Albania as an international transit. Regarding the second load, the Ministry of Environment says that it is waste from the Kurum company in Elbasan. The company itself has denied this statement.
Meanwhile, the Durrës prosecutor's office has interrogated the owner of the Albanian company that transported the waste to the Port of Durrës, both in the case of the cargo finished in China, and in the case of the shipment destined for Thailand.
For both cases, the institutions are passing the ball of responsibility to each other, not clarifying whether the cargoes were reported as toxic substances or not and whether there was authorization from the Ministry of Environment for their transport through the territory of Albania, as the law requires.
