Russia is already under unprecedented sanctions and now the EU could target Alina Kabaeva, a politician, media chief, former Olympic gymnast, and whether media rumors inside and outside Russia are true Vladimir Putin's girlfriend and mother of several children with her.
Sanctions imposed by the West have been conceived to punish those closest to Putin, oligarchs, politicians and other officials who are said to have benefited from their proximity to the Russian president.
Last month, the US and Great Britain imposed sanctions on his daughters Maria Vorontsova, 36, and Katherine Tikhonova, 35. They are his children with former wife Lyudmila.
So far Kabaeva has escaped sanctions, despite his closeness to Putin. An online petition in March called for her expulsion from the residence where she lives in Switzerland.

Sources have confirmed to the BBC that it is on the latest list of individuals to be sanctioned by the European Union. According to AFP, it will be targeted for its role in distributing Kremlin propaganda and for its "close connection" with 69-year-old President Putin. The draft document does not name him as his partner and the EU has not yet officially signed the proposal.
The Russian leader has always been very discreet in his private life. When asked about his private life, he avoided answers. However, he has explicitly denied an affair with Kabaevan.
In 2008, Correspondent Moskovsky reported that he was planning to divorce his wife Lyudmila and marry Kabaevan. Both rejected the story. Shortly after, authorities closed the newspaper. Putin and Lyudmila would announce their separation five years later.
At the time the Russian President denied that he had ties to Kabaeva, she was moving from a successful sports career to an even more successful career in politics. Kabaeva, at her peak as a gymnast, claims to have been the best in the world.

Born in 1983, she began rhythmic gymnastics at the age of four. Her coach, Irina Viner, says that "she has the rare combination of two essential qualities in rhythmic gymnastics - flexibility and agility".
Kabaeva would become known as "Russia's most flexible woman". She made her international debut in 1996 and was a surprise winner at the 1998 European Championships.
When she retired from sport, she had won 18 World Championship medals and 25 European Championship medals at the top of her Olympic awards. Like other Russian athletes, she has not escaped doping, losing her medals at an event in 2001, as it resulted in positives for a banned substance.
She moved into politics, holding a seat in Russia's lower house of parliament from 2007-2014 with the ruling United Russia party. In 2014 she became chairman of the National Media Group, which has large stakes in almost all major Russian state media.
Such media have conveyed pro-Kremlin messages about the war in Ukraine, accusing Ukrainians of bombing their cities and presenting Russian troops as liberation. Her position is said to have made her a wealthy woman, with unearthed documents suggesting she earns about $12 million a year.
It is not known when she and Putin first met, but it is not unusual for an Olympic sportsman to meet the president of a country. It's a photo of the couple since 2001, when Putin gave her the Order of Friendship, a high state honor.
There are rumours that they have some children together, though the exact number no one knows. A Swiss newspaper reported that Ms Kabaeva had a son in 2015 at an exclusive clinic near Lake Lugano and another boy in the same place in 2019. But, the Sunday Times and Wall Street Journal said she had twins in 2019 in Moscow.
The Kremlin denies such reports. In 2015, Putin's spokesman said that "information about the birth of a baby of Vladimir Putin's father does not correspond to reality". Such is Putin's image in public, he has never mentioned the names of children he has with Lyudmila, except to say that he has two adult daughters.
