The largest gold deposit in the world is discovered

China has announced that it has discovered the largest known deposit of gold in the world, the value of which is estimated at more than 76 billion euros.

The deposit at the Wangu gold mine, located in central China, may contain more than 1,000 tons of gold, Chinese state media reported, citing the Geological Institute of Hunan Province, the Independent writes.

According to the institute, 40 gold veins – long, narrow fissures in rock filled with the metal – were discovered at a depth of about 1,600 meters in Pingjiang, Hunan Province.

These veins alone may contain around 300 tons of gold, and deeper layers may hide even larger reserves, geologists claim.

"Many of the rocks sampled showed obvious traces of gold," said Chen Rulin, a geologist and researcher at the Institute of Geology.

Exploratory drilling on the outskirts of the area has revealed additional gold reserves, suggesting they may be even larger than originally estimated.

In total, this area could contain more than 1,000 metric tons of gold, which, at current market prices, would be worth more than 600 billion yuan, or about 78 billion euros.
