Throughout this year, our country has increased the import of flour from abroad, where the main weight is occupied by wheat flour. This phenomenon has occurred despite the considerable supply from companies in the country, which buy wheat and turn it into flour.
The official data of the General Directorate of Customs show that until November 2022, 20.8 thousand tons of flour worth 1.4 billion ALL or 14 million dollars were imported. While during this year, for the same period, the import of this product is recorded at 22 thousand tons with a value of 1.18 billion ALL. In other words, it seems that the favorable and competitive price offered from abroad has increased the quantity purchased and therefore what is sold in Albanian markets. And the increase in quantity is also an indicator of consumer demand for this product.
Despite the campaign that was undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture for the cultivation of wheat in the country, the product produced by Albanian farmers has not been very preferred by the companies because it has been considered of poor quality as a result of the many rains of the season. On the other hand, the price demanded by the farmers in relation to the price on the stock exchange was considered high by the collectors, who were not very interested in buying local produce.
The subsidies given for the cultivation of wheat in the countries of the region make the production costs cheaper and therefore the final product for sale, which brings competition to farmers and to local flour production companies.
