The euro is continuing its decline this week, hitting historically low levels against the lek.

According to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Albania, the European currency closed the week at 96.46 lekë, the lowest level ever recorded.

In the free foreign exchange market, the euro is exchanged even cheaper, around 95 lekë, while in some second-tier banks, the exchange rate has dropped below this new psychological threshold.

According to foreign exchange agents, the decline is mainly related to the increased supply of foreign currency in the market. A common phenomenon for this time of year, driven by the return of emigrants for the end-of-year holidays and higher flows of euros into the economy.

However, unlike previous years, the annual decline in the exchange rate is more moderate. Compared to the same period last year, the euro has lost about 2.1 percent of its value against the lek.

The relative stabilization of the exchange rate during this year is mainly attributed to the interventions of the Bank of Albania.

The Central Bank has purchased significant amounts of currency, around 800 million euros by the end of 9 months of 2025, to stem the further decline of the euro.

Without these interventions, experts estimate that the exchange rate would have fallen even lower. Meanwhile, the Bank of Albania has announced that it will increase its planned purchases of foreign exchange for 2026, with the aim of strengthening foreign exchange reserves.

Another factor that has contributed to the strengthening of the lek is the government's austerity fiscal policy, coupled with a budget surplus. However, expected spending at the end of December may bring a temporary increase in the euro exchange rate in the coming days.
