What is happening with business lending? Why are large companies taking

During the last two years, companies in the country have experienced a good financial situation, which is reflected in the obvious shift from short-term loans for liquidity needs to long-term loans for investments.

The trend is stronger for big business, which in these two years has enjoyed a fairly good liquidity situation due to increased prices. And it is precisely the big business that has reduced the demand for loans these two years, while we have a slowdown in growth for the medium, and stronger growth for the small.

The trend is clearly observed if the indicators of the purpose of obtaining loans are analyzed, where we see a strong tendency towards long-term loans and modest growth rates of short-term loans. According to the official data of the Bank of Albania, from ALL 39 billion in January 2022, the loan in the national currency of the business for working capital results in 40.3 billion at the end of October 2023, with an increase of only 1 billion ALL.

Stronger is the growth of the overdraft, which from 40.3 billion in January 2022, results in 52.8 billion in October 2023. There has also been a gradual increase in the loan in lek for the purchase of assets from companies, which, however, has decreased strong in the fall of this year, after a strong increase in the summer months. At the end of October, it amounts to 29.8 billion ALL, from 49.5 billion in January 2022.

Meanwhile, the companies' investments in real estate seem to have excelled. From 34.1 billion in January 2022, the loan of businesses for the purchase of real estate results in 60.1 billion at the end of October.

The developments are also approximate for the loan in the common European currency. The equivalent of the loan in euros for working capital expressed in our national currency is 28.5 million ALL in October 2023, from 31.5 billion in January 2022, or, from almost 300 million euros, it has fallen to 280 million euros. The overdraft in euros has registered a slight increase. From 42.2 billion ALL or almost 420 million euros in January 2022, it results in 44.8 billion ALL or a little more than 440 million euros in October 2023.

Meanwhile, even in the case of loans in euros, it is the loan for the purchase of immovable assets that has had a strong growth. Expressed in Lek, its total results in 90.1 billion in October, from 75.1 billion at the beginning of 2022. Or roughly, from 750 million euros, it has increased to almost 900 million euros in less than two years.
