Soap, cheese and historical travel

Edi Rama

At the beginning of his political career, many considered Edi Rama to be a foreign policy profane, inexperienced and incapable of navigating the international scene.

Today, he has built an active profile in relations abroad. Although here too he is characterized by an orientation towards showmanship and protagonism - for those who see him as the "captain of the heart team", this is enough.

For others, appearance and personal presence are never enough for a statesman, whose primary duty in the face of history is to balance the country's long-term strategic interests. Valid even when he is not around.

One could claim that the eventual entry into Europe is a result of this “style.” But it is not. Neither the move towards the EU nor the entry into NATO came about because of “Rama’s athletes” or the army with slippers of the Berisha era.

Albania became part of NATO even after a major military scandal and a national tragedy like Gërdeci. Even integration into the European Union, if it comes (the chances are limited), will come for geopolitical reasons that are already known, not for Rama's merits.

Rama and Berisha themselves know these stories well. They would look somewhat more manly if they themselves refused to hang these medals around their necks because they are fake. Of course they would never do such a thing. They are not of that breed.

But if we want a final example of why EU integration is determined by geopolitical factors beyond our control, let us look at our rapid acceptance of the invitation to the “Peace Board”, even though the European Union is skeptical and rejecting. This clearly shows the huge gap between the rhetoric and the reality of integration. Otherwise, it is unlikely that a candidate country at the peak of the process would not only accept that lightning invitation, but also declare it a historic victory.

Since we are here: Victory for whom?

Is this decision a well-considered national interest? If so, which strategy debated, analyzed, and concluded as such? Did this supposed analysis take into account today's geopolitical circumstances? In these circumstances, does a country like ours need more multilateralism than alignments?

But has Edi himself learned anything from his personal experience with Trump? Yesterday he called him "a disgrace to humanity", today he is struggling like a fish out of water and is ready to pay billions (not from his own pocket of course) to erase and forget what he did.

Has he thought about the future of this "peace" structure that lacks broad international consensus and carries a strong personalizing spirit? Will he have to struggle again tomorrow to erase today as he struggles today to erase yesterday?

The questions are endless but they are all useless. No one has turned to that side. The Prime Minister no, no. In fact, he today declares the invitation of the one he called a shame as great pride. Why?

Because the truth is that we need this invitation, packaged as a major international policy, and it will be used entirely for domestic political consumption.

Public opinion has been hit hard by corruption scandals. The soap of brutal waste of public money must be sold for cheese: So the government is not as corrupt as our prosecutors who commit "world-class stupidities" say. Even out there in the world, just so you know, prosecutors are "idiots" who commit "a bag of s..." (quotes from the Prime Minister).

Therefore, this historic trip to Washington should be proclaimed as an anti-corruption seal.

For this we need 'news cycles'. No one needs a state analysis of the costs and long-term consequences of the alignment. In its place, there will be TV shills and palazzos with "salaries" of tens of thousands of euros a month. The public space will be filled with these professional boasters, while skepticism and the attempt to think that we deserve a little more as a society will be labeled as hostility.

The applausers, the eternal brawlers of our ridiculous claque that no Balzac can typify, will laugh as always. Identical in behavior and mindset to that Albania, which our visionary leader scorns – occasionally and accidentally, like the former North Korea of ??Europe.

But he himself needs Albania, which has been suffering since the slaps.

And from what I can see, he likes it.
