In 1978, Albania was a country living with ideology, typical of societies with a collective conscience; and not with ideas, which are typical of free societies with man at the center, with the individual designing new worlds.

Albania was isolated, poor and where young people's passions often ended quickly, as in the novel "Apple Flowers" by the British writer John Galsworthy, written in 1916.

He had not even considered that in a country like Albania, girls drank poison when they were not free to love the boy they wanted. Maybe they were right. Life was gloomy and they had nothing else to do. Shakespeare had produced similar stories, but who would have thought that a dictatorial regime would produce such sublimations?!

Young people today cannot understand this panorama. For many of us or older, it is a duty to confess.

How does the story begin?

The women suddenly changed ugly. Almost unbelievably, they went from being sweet in the photos, beautiful and elegant, to harsh, cold and lost their feminine charm. They went from low-cut dresses to suits with long skirts or blouses stuck up to the throat. The climax was when his hair was cut short. And suddenly the apple blossoms disappeared from the work tables. They kept their scents hidden under the covers during the white nights.

Women and men were not much different from each other and the inability to find new avenues of temptation made life boring. It was not easy for anyone, but as always, it was even more difficult for the woman. And if you were a woman of another class (of political persecution), it would be even worse. Freedom was impossible to achieve because for society this class was just a number.

A woman of that class had no right to have dreams or ambitions. To search for a future, many of them would have to keep a lot of secrets, travel far and everywhere; while others had to face the norms of a backward and chauvinistic society, despite enjoying a status in society.

In the end, all of them, political or not, realized that they wanted the same thing: to be free... And if, to be free, they had to break the law, they showed that they were willing to they did, regardless of the price.

In the last two decades, the question of the decommunization of Albania has been raised in a less formally European way, how to establish a net of prohibition and interruption for any possible presence of invisible powers originating from totalitarianism. It seemed that there would be no more political campaigns with the traditional "communist - anti-communist" opposition. A certain belief was created that the separation from the past, for better or for worse, by legal means or popular pressure, was being resolved outside of ideological debates. But it happened that everything returned to the starting point.

What happened was what Marx and Engels, in the "Manifesto of the Communist Party", called "a ghost that haunts Europe" - the ghost of communism. By means of the communist gogol, people can be silenced and their questions forbidden. It continues today.
This means that the past is still not seen as history, but as ideology.

But why? What are we missing?

Through the streets of Rome, on hot summer days, one can stop by the ancient fountains, which have endured the wrath of Nero, in addition to the wars of rebellions, campaigns and inquisitions. They have been serving people for two thousand years. And this is called inheritance. In the life of Albanians, more ruins and signs of historical memory are inherited than historical memory itself. The oral one even worse.

In Christian literature, confession helps us realize that we are sinners just as much as anyone else. Feeling sorry for our sins we ask for forgiveness to live a holier life in the divine light of God. Confession helps us cultivate emotionally and spiritually, teaching us how to accept and learn from our mistakes.

There are moments in life when time seems to stand still. Moments we remember only in a second. To forget or to remember...

Who hasn't had this happen to them? Forget your past forever. Wipe it out in a single cast. But how can you be so naive to believe that you can do it? This does not happen. Never. Because someone always comes, there, next to you as a sign to remember him.

That's why we confess. Not for myself, but for time and what is called national memory.

Books teach you to forget, the events and characters within the content have the power to give you the confidence to break away from anything you can't seem to forget. We know that it is always good to take care of yourself, avoid excessive friendships, let go of memories that hurt you or forget everything.

But forgetting is not always easy. Sometimes life catches up with us and we can't escape it. The truth is that we are our memories and each of them, for better or for worse, makes us who we are.

No matter what we do, no matter how much we fight to change our life, appearance or name, it is the memories that always remain with us. And the most important ones we can never forget.

The last books of Albanian authors, such as A. Markarian, L. Rama, R. Petro, which I have read not long ago, are an inalienable proof of a life in search of freedom. And this cannot be denied. In childhood among colorful dolls, where their mothers no longer dressed beautifully, in gymnasiums where life full of humor drove freedom, or in libraries where, despite the stern eye of the librarian, the beautiful welcome of friends sanctified this place as if you were in a church.

How simple it would be if we lived every day without thinking about the past, the present or the future; just live happily, try to make those around us happy and forget everything that has hurt us in life. Because, despite what they say, our shared past has not been so good for everyone...

So we must always think that if we do not confess the damage done to us, the past becomes inextricably our present, trapping us again in a trap from which we cannot escape. But man is mechanized to live in the present and believe in the future.

We know or not that this is not easy, but who said that life is?
