In his monumental book of Memories, Ekrem Bey Vlora has a passage that summarizes, in a way, all the rhetoric, servility, and patriotic hypocrisy of politicians during these 100 years of the Albanian state.

Ekrem Bey's father, Syrja Vlora, a well-known diplomat of the Ottoman state who played an important role in the Albanian national movement, asked one of the beys of the time, involved in the events of 1912, why he was in favor of French policies, especially when he had nothing to do with that country and did not even speak their language.

The Albanian Bey's response remains a monument to the mercenary mentality of Albanian politics:

"Syria, you have the Austro-Hungarians, the Libokhovs have Italy, the Pasha of the North has the Serbs, with the Turks they are half the millet. But where will I get my salary if Dovleti falls?"

This answer, brought with humor by a keen observer of Albanian politics like Ekrem bey Vlora, is in fact one of the greatest dilemmas of the existence of the Albanian state.

I was reminded of this historical-literary moment, as today I was at a media panel where one of the interlocutors stated that in fact the state of Iran, which today was declared a terrorist state by the Albanian parliament, has been present in Albanian spaces for over 30 years, financing a series of institutions, but especially Albanian politicians.

The gentleman on the panel said that our former speaker of parliament has long been financed by the Iranian state, two presidents of the republic as well, clerics, academics, employees of security institutions, as well as a former deputy mayor of Tirana had been supported or sponsored for years by the Iranian state.

In fact, imagine when a peripheral state, without any strong political-territorial reason, is so present in Albania (if we take today's public declaration on TV for granted). What can we say about our neighbors?

How many politicians, scientific figures, journalists, national security officials, political leaders, and so on are secretly funded by the services of our neighbors?

How many politicians or influential people in the political spectrum, in business, in culture, in the religious sphere, and in the media are at the service of the policies of other countries?

How many projects of national interest are sabotaged or slowed down by our country's decision-makers in favor of the policies of our neighbors?

How many political actions are taken in narrow, non-national interests?

Of course, these are difficult questions to answer accurately. But unless Albanians once and for all cut off foreign influence in our national affairs, the country will continue to suffer.

And our politicians will continue the policy of the former Bey, who with the fall of the State will throw themselves into the lap of another State, it is enough for them to pay.
