The free fall of "free" media!

The news that Albania ranks last in the region for the media freedom index and 20 places below last year can be shocking for someone, but not for everyone.

How is it possible that our eastern neighbor Macedonia is ranked 57th and Albania 107th ?!

A colleague from Skopje who knows equally well the problems of the media in Albania tells me: "here if a mistake is made by the government towards the media, an apology is taken and measures are taken and… here the big media are not trumpets of the government"

What happened that we are 20 places below?

If for years (2018) the government has been spinning a bill that was also criticized by the Venice Commission and never makes it clear whether it has finally given up or is still in the drawer, then this is not a fact that does not speak well of media freedom. .

If there are incidents against journalists and no action is ever taken, let alone apologize, this behavior does not lead to improved rankings. (I meanwhile remember an unforgettable scene from January 8 where a cameraman over the TV car was filming the protest at the PD headquarters and the water under pressure from the police was directed at him as if he were the target for entertainment)

If it acts with lightning speed to replace the board of the public broadcaster, with candidates in violation of legal criteria let alone political balance, this is certainly reflected and kept in mind.

If the institutions that are supposed to serve the public and the media industry turn to government service, do not expect to be applauded for this major achievement!

If during the year it is noticed that the main television stations fall one by one into the hands of the government clientele, this naturally has nothing to do with the freedom of the press.

If you find large pro-government TV stations in Albania, but find it difficult to find large pro-opposition media, this speaks to the freedom of choice of media owners, but not to the freedom of journalists.

If you have a very good law for informing the public with official documents, but its implementation is deteriorating, in theory you will get maximum marks, while in practice you will not pass.

You can not have free media in conditions of fear, insecurity and corruption. A free media means that the journalist and the editor make decisions based only on their professional conscience and not on the mobile phone.

If you do not find criticism and research in the media, but only propaganda mixed with "fights", "debates" of the format two-three here and two-three there, it means that you have guaranteed the spectacle, but not necessarily the health of the fourth power.

The fourth power is the guard dog, and not the greyhound (hunting dog) or the house fun dog.
