Calling Putin a friend these days is an insult to people with empathy. But former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is proud. That says it all about his character, writes Marcel Fürstenau.

There is war in Europe. Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine. The order was given by Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022. Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had tried in vain to change the position of the ruler in the Kremlin. With him Putin gave the guests a few words about his best friend outside Russia: the Germans should be grateful to Gerhard Schröder. The former chancellor is an "independent expert" and a "fair man".

The gas lobbyist with a Social Democrat card is accustomed to praise from the mouth of a man likely to be a war criminal. Both of these men have been perfectly understood for several years. Schröder's claim that Putin is "a flawless Democrat" is legendary and speaks for itself. Two boasters follow one another in praise and throw sand in the eyes of others. A final example: Schröder's statements in an interview with the New York Times.

Schröder as Putin's personal spokesman

That man, who for decades likes himself in the pose of someone that others should listen to, lowers his voice when it comes to his friend Putin. "All I can tell you is that Putin is interested in ending the war. But this is not so simple. "There are some things that need to be clarified." Schröder sounds like the personal agent of the former Russian agent. Someone talks nonsense and even tries to create the impression, that he knows more than he says. This is the selfishness of an old man, who keeps his empty phrases for the rhetoric of a statesman. At a time when Schröder was missing the chance to become an "Elder Statesman" like Helmut Schmidt, Richard von Weizsäcker, shortly after losing in 2005 to Angela Merkel, served as Putin as the gatekeeper who opens the door to energy deals with Germany.

Schröder could turn to example

The desire for self-esteem has been an important feature of Schröder masculinity. Labels like "friend of the bosses" he deserved. The former left-wing politician (Schröder was the leader of the Young Socialists) has always liked and likes to be equal to bosses weighing millions. And this is not an accusation. Schröder finally managed to climb the career ladder from the simplest layer. Seen from this perspective he could also be an example. But he has never been deprived of the image of an arrogant man who has indulged himself in pleasure and to add to that it has been noticed, that he has always had only himself in the center. And whoever puts himself in the epicenter has a tendency to overestimate.
