Serbia has rejected sanctions imposed by the entire West on Russia, has not called for the withdrawal of Russian troops publicly, nor condemned Russian aggression in Ukraine.
But, the pro vote for the US, Albania and 92 other countries in the UN Extraordinary Assembly this Wednesday ranks, according to Prime Minister Edi Rama, alongside the West.
"141 countries punish Russia with their vote at the UN against aggression against Ukraine! Russia enters the period of the greatest loneliness of its history with only 4 ultradictatorial countries standing by it! Serbia's vote against Russia unifies the Western Balkans with the West," Rama writes.
But can this vote show that Serbia has broken away from Moscow and elected the West? It can hardly be said yes. UN resolutions have for years turned into pieces of paper that Russia ignores. In Syria, Georgia and up to Crimea the UN has responded with similar documents and resolutions, but in no case have they prevented Moscow from continuing ahead with its plans.
It seems their weight is known, Belgrade may have previously received Moscow's "blessing" to vote against its interests, because the end is at all a vote with symbolic effect, but with no strengthening mechanism to implement it.
This is why many international diplomats and politicians, among them former U.S. diplomacy chief Henry Kissinger, have called for reforming the UN and especially the Security Council, where one of the proposals is the removal of the right to veto and the empowerment of the organization's peacekeeping troops.
Therefore, as long as Serbia chooses to join the West with the pro vote in documents that for Russia are merely pieces of paper worthless and refuses to join in works, such as sanctions, Belgrade cannot line up with the West.
