In an interview given, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Agron Gjekmarkaj, while commenting on the ongoing quarrel about the past of the former President Meta, called on the latter to solve this tangled mess himself, which in these hours seems to be moving the parliament and the entire Albanian politics, in the middle of the holiday season. Gjekmarkaj appealed to Ilir Meta to officially address the Authority dealing with the files, asking him to declassify everything found in the archives of the State Security on his person.

The nature of the Albanian file law leaves the citizen the initiative to open and declassify materials related to his person in the secret archives of communism. On the other hand, for officials or political representatives running for high state positions, the authority must provide each of them with a certificate of purity. The current impasse concerning the former president Meta and the accusations of involvement in the files of the Security, is related to the fact that due to a legal amendment of several years ago, Meta and other high officials who received certificates of purity in distant past, cannot be verified when new facts emerge along the way.

This circumstance places in the hands of the person himself, in this case the former president, the opportunity to shed light and clarify within a few days, the real status in relation to the involvement or not in recruitment activities in the communist past. Gjekmarkaj's suggestion puts the current fight about the "Meta file" into the procedural hole, trying to get it out of the noisy bazaar of politicization and propaganda.

Ilir Meta has not yet submitted any official request to the Authority to clarify his status. He is satisfied with the certificates of purity he received from the Mezini and Bezhani commissions. On the other hand, the state authority of the files itself is claiming that facts about Meta have recently surfaced, which neither Bezhani nor Mezini have documented.

There is no one more interested than Ilir Meta to be transparent about these accusations that tomorrow, when the Assembly eventually approves the repeal of the 2015 amendment, could create a very delicate situation for him. Until now, the former president is dealing with the problem in a political and populist way. He accuses that a conspiracy is being made against him, without trying to shed light on the alleged conspiracy himself, in an official and legal way.

Basically, the Meta File can only be cleared procedurally. The political lane has only obscured and hidden over the years the problem of State Security collaborators in Albanian politics. Meta has the chance to dismiss with a stroke of the pen the serious public accusation of involvement with the State Security. It is enough to ask the Authority in an official way to declassify what is in his address. Imagine what it would look like in public with an official response from the Files Authority that he is clean and has no past involvement. What would be left for this institution that today breaks down the initials IM as "Ilir Meta", if it were forced to express the opposite?! What would be left of Edi Rama and others in the government, or even the Speaker of the Assembly, who have spoken about shocking facts about Meta, if Meta himself came out clean?! The boomerang would be terrible and the public image of the majority would be badly damaged by this story. Why is Mr. Meta late then?!

The historical truth of the files has been regularly obscured in these 30 years, getting into the cunning gears of politics. Until today, the process of finding, identifying and removing from public life the associates of Sigurimi has not happened completely, because it has only been filtered through the lens of politics. Sinners have been hidden there or people without shadows in their past have been unjustly hit.

However, today we have a legal and institutional framework that can objectively shed light on this dark sector of Albanian life. Dozens and hundreds of episodes of people who have discovered what the secret archives contain for themselves and their relatives by following legal steps, are a satisfactory basis of objectivity and solid practice to get to the truth. Ilir Meta and other politicians, who have given shape to this process by approving laws and rules of the game, must obey the fact that only the procedure, and not the cries of politics and propaganda, can lead to the disclosure of the truth.

The IM file should not be an exception to the rule, except that government critics have every right in the world to suspect Edi Rama of manipulation, just as the rest have the right to think the opposite. Only procedure, not politicization, gets us out of this mess.
