Former US Ambassador to Tirana, Yuri Kim, has a new job, following her early retirement from the US State Department. In an announcement shared on her social media, Kim announced that she has started working as a director at Exxon Mobil, a company that is not unknown even in the Albanian market.

The company in question owns the two famous thermal power plants in the city of Vlora, which were leased by the Albanian state for energy production, and were never put into operation.

The agreement to bring them to Albania was made precisely while Kim was carrying out her diplomatic mission in Tirana.

Kim himself would write at the time, in a post from the US embassy in Tirana:  It is an honor to be part of today's signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, the culmination of vision and hard work by a number of people around the globe. I want to congratulate ExxonMobil, Excelerate Energy and Minister Balluku and her entire team for realizing a strategic and fruitful dream that we have been working on together for over a year now. Today's signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is groundbreaking!

Kim's appointment to the leadership position of this company raises questions about the role the diplomat had in signing the agreement between Exxon Mobil and the Albanian government in 2022.

The decision to lease the two ships was opposed at the time not only by the opposition, but also by environmental activists, who raised concerns about the pollution they would produce in the Triport area.

How the ships that would produce energy were installed in Vlora

The energy crisis that began in late summer 2021 reached its peak in 2022, exposing Albania to high import prices. KESH decided to lease thermal power generators and in the end, after conducting competitive procedures, two floating thermal generators were secured.

The ships are located in Triport of Vlora. The latter would produce energy through oil as needed. The capacity of the two units is 110 MW.

In a scenario for the energy situation during 2023, official data showed that energy production from these units would cost 165 million euros.

The generators were expected to produce 884 GWh at a production cost of 185 euros/MWh, something that never materialized.

The value of the thermal generators was estimated at 15 million euros, while the rent for a 2-year period was estimated at 46 million dollars./voice
