Vjosa reaches critical point, Mayor Mersini: We will evacuate families at risk
Mayor of Vlora Municipality, Brunilda Mersini

The situation on the Vjosa River has reached a critical point, as heavy rainfall and water flows have raised the river level to 8.6 meters.

Local authorities are carefully monitoring the situation, while 13 families have already been evacuated from the most at-risk areas.

The Mayor of Vlora, Brunilda Mersini, said that the situation remains difficult, but there are signs of stability in the coming hours.

"The situation is currently at a critical point, because the flows in the Vjosa are at a level of 8.6 meters. But in the coming hours, we hope that there will be a decrease in the amount, considering that the southern part, which is the part that brings the water flows to this level, has a stability of flows there. And this will be reflected for about 12 hours. We have areas at risk for 6 families, who if there is a critical point, will be evacuated. Currently, 13 families have been evacuated."

Meanwhile, the Director of the Vlora District Police, Elidon Çela, confirmed that all police and civil emergency structures are on standby to intervene if the situation worsens.

"Also, the police structures are all on standby. We have made all police vehicles available. The Police and Civil Emergencies will intervene when necessary. We are following the dynamics of the situation and, depending on the situation, the appropriate steps will be taken," said Çela.

Authorities appeal to citizens to stay informed and respect safety instructions, remembering that rainfall and water flows can change quickly, especially in areas closer to the river.

According to forecasts, the inflows from the southern area, which supply the southern part of the river, have shown a slight stability, which may positively affect the gradual decrease of the water level over the next 12 hours. However, the situation remains unstable and the civil emergency structures and the police will continue permanent monitoring.
