In the emergency room of the infectious disease hospital at QSUT, the number of new cases with HIV/AIDS has increased.
The head of the infectious disease hospital at QSUT, Najada Çomo, in her first interview for Gazetasi.al, says that the new cases are over 18 years old, mostly men, where the vast majority are homosexuals or drug users.
According to her, the cases with severe forms of hepatitis B, a viral infection that is transmitted through the sexual route, are worrying, but fortunately there has been no loss of life.
The head of the infectious disease hospital, Najada Çomo, says that, in addition to Covid-19 cases, patients affected by infectious diseases are also being treated at the hospital. Which are viral and bacterial in nature such as leishmaniasis, brucellosis, or diseases caused by rodents and vectors or gastrointestinal diseases.
But according to her, the number of admissions has not changed compared to the years before the pandemic.
" The number of hospitalizations has not changed, I can even say that it is lower, but the severe forms of hepatitis B have increased in the ward. The most recent case is a 45-year-old woman who came in a serious condition, but fortunately not we have lost lives.
Hepatitis B is known as a disease that is transmitted through sexual means, but not only. The risk of infection is also tattoos, or the use of syringes from one person to another, among injection drug users .
Çomo says that the increase in HIV cases is worrying.
" This is more worrying, the increase in new HIV cases and the decrease in the age of patients.
We have 80 new cases so far where HIV has been found among 18-year-olds. The vast majority of new cases belong to the homosexual category, but there are also many affected in the heterosexual category. I can say that the majority of cases are men. I must say that especially young people come at an early stage. Fortunately, they have responded well to therapy. Mostly 18-30 year olds are informed that the treatment is efficient and immediately agree to enter the scheme, but there are also cases mainly 45-70 years old who catch the disease in advanced stages. Cases of over 18-year-olds living in urban areas, mainly Tirana, and emigrants returning to their homeland for vacations dominate. But it must be said that the HIV virus has been circulating within the country for years .
