There are many reactions to the serious incident that occurred this Monday at the Tirana Court of Appeals, where judge Astrit Kalaja was killed, while two other people were injured.
The High Prosecutorial Council (KLP) considers the assassination an attack on the Constitution.
"The High Prosecutorial Council is deeply shocked by the serious event that struck the justice system and the entire Albanian society today, where the judge of the Court of Appeal, Mr. Astrit Kalaja, was shot dead inside the courtroom, while performing his duties.
The murder of a magistrate in the courtroom is an unimaginable act, which constitutes not only a crime against a representative of justice, but also a direct attack on the Constitution, the rule of law, and public security as a whole.
In these moments of mourning, the High Prosecutorial Council wishes to convey its deepest condolences to the family, relatives and colleagues of Judge Astrit Kalaja, expressing full solidarity with the entire judiciary.
"This tragedy reminds us of the necessity of strong institutional unity and shared state responsibility to protect every representative of justice who serves in the name of the law," the KLP's response states.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court says that the murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja is an alarm signal for the safety of judges.
The Supreme Court emphasizes that guaranteeing the physical and institutional security of judges is a direct state responsibility, requiring immediate and sustained action.
"The judicial body of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Albania expresses its shock and deep sorrow for the tragic event that brought about the loss of life of the judge of the Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction Astrit Kalaja, and conveys its most sincere condolences to his family, relatives and colleagues.
This serious event is an alarm signal for the security situation in which the judges of the Republic exercise their functions and for the worrying state of the infrastructure in which many of the Albanian courts operate.
In a state governed by the rule of law, a judge must feel protected and respected in the exercise of his or her duties, not only from a physical and infrastructural point of view, but also through a public climate of respect and restraint in the language used towards his or her figure. Any form of denigration or contempt towards a judge undermines the authority of justice and the citizens' trust in the rule of law.
The Supreme Court considers that guaranteeing the physical and institutional security of judges is a direct state responsibility, which requires immediate and sustained action.
"Protecting judges is protecting justice itself and the public's trust in the rule of law," the Supreme Court states .
