The first half of this year has brought a record level of income from foreign citizens who have travelled to Albania.

In the other way, even the expenses of Albanians abroad have reached unprecedented figures so far.

The Bank of Albania's balance of payments data indicates that in the first 6 months of 2023, the expenses of foreigners who have traveled to Albania totaled 1.55 billion euros. This is the highest figure ever recorded since the 90s and reflects Albania's return to a favorite tourist destination this year. Foreign travel spending has increased by 37% compared to the same period a year ago.

In the second quarter alone, foreign spending reached EUR 930 million, with an increase of nearly 30% compared to the same period a year ago.

Other data of INSTAT disclosed that in the period January-June, the number of foreign citizens who entered the Albanian territory is 3,396,932. This number has increased by 33.0%, compared to the same period in 2022.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the throne continues to be held by patriotic tourism and specifically Kosovo Albanians, with 40% of the total. From Kosovo, more than 6.1 million visitors have entered Albania for the first 38 months of the year, or 43 percent more than the same period a year ago.

In second place are Italians, with 310,6 visitors from the neighbouring country setting a record in the first six months. Italians occupied 9% of the total. The figures show that by the number of North Macedonia and Montenegro are respectively the third and fourth group that even here have been the dominant parts over the years have been albanians of the three.

More foreigners are coming to the country, but more Albanians are choosing to travel abroad. According to the data of the Bank of Albania, for the first six months of the year, albanian expenditures for travel abroad were 977 million euros, with an increase of 23% compared to January-June 2022.

Other DATA of INSTAT reported that the number of Albanian citizens leaving the territory of Albania during the first six months 2023 is 3,024,102, increasing by 20.0%, compared to the same period a year ago.

The country has 794 million euros left over from tourism

While foreigners have increased the shepnisations in Albania, the same has happened with Albanian citizens who travel abroad. However, more money is left in place. According to the Bank of Albania, the balance of trips, which measures the difference between foreigners' spending in Albania and Albanians abroad was 794 million euros, which is the highest figure ever recorded.

Since 2015, Albania has a positive balance of travel, which has been increasing year after year. /Monitor
