For several days, the Orthodox Church of Albania, headed for 30 years by Greek citizen Anastas Janullatos, has been embroiled in fierce controversy with the Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Ilias Damianakis.
Damianakis has published an article in Greek accusing the Albanian Church of receiving money from "foreign oligarchs".
"While the efforts of international oligarchs with personal interests have contributed to the reconstruction or restoration of over 250 churches (in Albania), their focus seems to be more towards these efforts than strict adherence to the Canonical Orthodox Principles," Damianakis writes among others.
While in its reaction the Church of Albania points out that, as the context indicated, the term "international oligarchs" means Russians.
"This is a malicious and blatant lie," the Albanian Orthodox Church said in a statement.
Finally, the Church of Albania points out that accusations of this kind are a complete distortion of the truth with the intention of supporting the lie that the Church of Albania "finds itself in the pipe of Russian propaganda".
We remember that the Church of Albania is among the churches that have not recognized the Autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church that the Ecumenical Patriarchate has given.
Also the Albanian Church continues to demand that the Pan-Orthodox Council be convened, being in line with the position held by the Church of Russia. At the same time, in any case, the Albanian Church has expressed its opposition to the decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate (for granting autocephaly to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church).
