US strikes Iran, Tehran responds with missiles and drones

Other airstrikes were reported in Qeshm, Bandar Abbas and the port of Sirik in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media reported at least 6 explosions on Qeshm Island, a strategic area for Iranian control of the strait, and at least 7 others in the port of Sirik.

The US Central Command said the strikes were in response to Iranian attacks on three merchant ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington says constitute unprovoked aggression and a violation of the ceasefire.

According to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, 85 US military installations were targeted in Kuwait and Bahrain in response to US attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. "In the first response to this aggression," said a statement carried by the official IRIB television, "the Navy and the Space Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a joint operation using missiles and drones, striking 85 strategic US military installations and downing an MQ-9 drone."

The escalation comes as negotiations between the United States and Iran are still ongoing for a final agreement after months of conflict. Earlier, the US Treasury Department had also revoked a temporary sanctions waiver that allowed Iran to produce, sell and export crude oil until August 21, further increasing economic pressure on Tehran.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that the United States has repeatedly violated the agreed memorandum of understanding and warned of retaliation after Washington's attacks on targets in the Strait of Hormuz.

"Iran issues a serious warning regarding the consequences of the United States' violation of the treaty and will take decisive measures to protect its national interests and security," the ministry said.
