Serbian propaganda "strikes" again

The September 10 match between the Albanian and Polish national teams at the "Air Albania" stadium in Tirana turned into 'fodder' for propaganda in some Serbian media. It all started with the gesture of the goalscorer for the Albanian team, Mirlind Daku, who took off his national team jersey, exposing the tattoo on his right shoulder in honor of the KLA fighter, Agim Ramadani. Serbian media described this act as a provocation, calling Ramadan a "terrorist", a narrative based on disinformation and hate speech.

The media of the region have widely reported the "irritation" in several articles in the Serbian language due to the exposure that the goalscorer of the Albanian national team, Mirlind Daku, made to his tattoo. The detail that caused the noise was the symbol of the tattoo on the athlete's shoulder, the Katana that identifies the KLA fighter, Agim Ramadani, and the number 138 that coincides with the brigade he led.

The striker from Gjilan made the celebratory gesture after scoring the second goal for the Albanian National Team against Poland at the 'Air Albania' stadium, in the qualifying matches for the 2024 European Championship.

UEFA punished the Albanian footballer with a yellow card, based on the rules of the matches that determine that when the player celebrates a goal by removing his shirt or covering his head with it, he will receive a yellow card.

Daku declared that he dedicated the goal to his family and all the martyrs of Kosovo who fell for freedom.

" I dedicate it to my family, which has always supported me, but also to all the martyrs in Kosovo, who have given everything for the Motherland and have contributed to us gathering from all over the world and playing with this jersey", declared Daku after the victory  .

" Scored a goal for an important win in the qualifiers and then showed off a large tattoo of a KLA terrorist ." - This is what the Serbian media Blic.rs writes , commenting on the gesture of the footballer Mirlind Daku. She continues by portraying the goalscorer Daku through Serbian nationalist rhetoric, calling him "born in Serbia, in Gjilan". Serbian media Blic.rs closes another article about the event with the sentence " Let's see if UEFA will react to this ".

Serbian media "Serbian.posten.com" also asked for UEFA's reaction to this action. "Although known for the idea that politics should not have a place in sports, the reaction of UEFA has remained absent for the moment" . - she writes .

In the following, the rhetoric became more severe, "enriching" it with some untruths such as:

The article of the Serbian media Blic claims that Daku called for the unification of the Albanian territories, when in fact he publicly thanked in the video those who " have contributed to us gathering from all over the world and playing with this jersey".

The very video that the Blic.rs article placed next to the false quote refutes the article's claim. A publication on the social network Twitter (X) under the name "Kosovar Football" has mistranslated the statement that it has also published with a video.

The news about the reaction of the Serbian media and their request to UEFA was widely reflected in the media that write in the Albanian language .

Often the media quoted other regional media regarding the claim raised in Serbia:

" He took off the shirt of Albania and thus the tattoo on the footballer's back was discovered - the broken stone on the Kosovo-Albania border and "Katana 138" dedicated to the commander Agim Ramadani. The Croatian media "Dnevnik" writes that due to the appearance of this tattoo, various media in Serbia have demanded the punishment of the attacker from Gjilan . – the TIME report .

"Katana" is the nickname by which commander Agrim Ramadani is known, one of the most prominent and active fighters of the Kosovo Liberation Army, commander of the Koshara (Ferizaj) area. He was born on May 3, 1963 in the municipality of Gjilan and was martyred on April 11, 1999 in Koshare during a battle with Serbian forces.

In the battle of Koshare , where he was killed, Ramadan was the commander of Brigade 138. After the end of the war, he was awarded the title of Hero of Kosovo. The Battle of Koshare was fought for 77 consecutive days, starting on April 9 and ending on June 19, 1999.

The Third Operational Group (GO - 3) - operated under the Command of the General Staff of the KLA through the Command of the Dukagjin Operational Area (KOMZOD) and consisted of three operational military units:

These units were established by order of the Minister in the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kosovo - Mr. Colonel Ahmet Krasniqi. Later "GO - 3" was renamed "Brigade 138 - Agim Ramadani".

Serbian nationalist rhetoric calls Ramadan a "criminal and terrorist" spreading false information with the aim of inciting nationalist sentiments among the Serbian people through hate speech. A reflection of this rhetoric is easily found today on the web on the Serbian website , where Ramadan is portrayed as " the right hand of Ramush Haradinaj and his terrorist gang that has been raiding Kosovo for decades, committing many crimes ".

Although Ramush Haradinaj has been acquitted twice by a court in The Hague of war crimes charges, this has not stopped Serbian nationalist rhetoric, which portrays him and other prominent KLA fighters as criminals.

Football matches often turn into the perfect arena to politicize the day by inciting nationalistic sentiments, hate speech and creating wrong perceptions through disinformation. This was also the case of the match between Albania and Poland, where the tattoo of a National Hero in Kosovo is condemned in Serbia as the image of a terrorist and criminal.

The historical debate between Serbia and Kosovo regarding the latter's affiliation, the lack of recognition of the Republic of Kosovo by Serbia and the latter's insistence on calling the KLA a terrorist organization, occasionally brings news and claims against figures various aspects of the liberation war of Kosovo.

The last victim of this "nationalist hysteria" is precisely the KLA fighter, Agim Ramadani, and the football player from Gjilan, Mirlind Daku, unfairly portrayed as a "promoter of Greater Albania" by the Serbian media./Faktoje.al
