The arrest in France of Albanian citizen Ermal Beqiri , after flying a small plane over the Penly nuclear power plant, is expected to be followed by a judicial procedure that could lead to his extradition to Albania.
According to a report by the French media outlet La Journal du Dimanche , there is a search warrant issued by Albanian authorities against Beqiri.
If this information is officially confirmed and the order proves valid, the French authorities may consider the request to hand him over to Albanian justice.
Legal sources explain to Vox News that the procedure is not automatic.
Initially, France completes verifications on criminal offenses committed on its territory.
Only then does the competent court consider the extradition request submitted by the requesting state.
In this specific case, Ermal Beqiri , in his capacity as pilot, has been fined for violating flight rules over a protected area, while investigations by French authorities continue to verify whether there are other criminal elements related to the incident.
According to French media, the case has been taken over by the Central Office for the Fight against Organized Crime (OCLCO).
If French authorities do not file other charges that require his trial in France, then the extradition procedure could take priority.
If the extradition is approved, Ermal Beqiri will be handed over to the Albanian authorities, where he will face criminal proceedings for the "AKSHI" file where he is accused of hundreds of millions of euros of abuse.
