The North Atlantic is entering an active phase with increased dynamics, which, according to forecasts, will bring unstable weather and heavy rainfall over Europe in late October and early November, warn meteorologists from Severe Weather Europe.

A warmer-than-average sea encourages the development of frontal systems with more moisture, so frequent rains and an increased risk of flooding are expected. A typical autumn pattern takes shape over the North Atlantic and Western Europe, where deep atmospheric troughs develop, bringing moisture and warmth to the continent.

"Bombastic cyclone" and strong winds

A "bombastic cyclone" is forming that could bring winds of up to 130 km/h over the Atlantic and Bay of Biscay, with dangerous waves and strong currents along the coasts of France, Ireland and Scotland. Additional instability is being created by the weakened Hurricane Melissa, which is now contributing to the dynamics of the Atlantic system.

Meteorologists expect the unstable pattern to continue until early November, with possible periods of heavy rainfall and local flooding.

Record warm seas and the consequences

Due to warm summers and global warming, the seas around Europe are significantly warmer than average. Temperatures of 22–23 °C have been recorded in the central-western Mediterranean and around the Azores, while values of 10 to 15 °C have been recorded in Western Europe and the North and Baltic Seas.

Rising temperatures, especially around Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea, could encourage the development of winter fronts and storms and bring heavier rain or snow later this year.

Wetter air and greater risk of flooding

Warmer seas increase moisture in the atmosphere, which favors the development of cyclones and storms. The more humid air feeds frontal systems coming from the Atlantic, bringing heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding.

Meteorologists warn that due to unusually warm seas, the beginning of November will be marked by frequent storms, strong winds and strong cyclones over much of Europe.
